CHINESE REFUGEES

FUNDS TO HELP CHILDREN The Mayor (Mr W. G. Tweedy) makes the following appeal on behalf of Chinese refugee children:— “An appeal has been made throughout New Zealand for funds to provide for the many Chinese children who are destitute as a result of the present war with Japan, and Timaru has been asked to support the appeal. “At the present time it is estimated that there are nearly 2,000,000 such children in China. It is almost impossible for us to realise just what this means. With headquarters at present in Hankow, an Association for Chinese War Refugee Children has been formed. The immediate object is to care for 20,000 children, and later on to sunport as many as funds will permit. The appeal in New Zealand aims at raising not less than £5,00 n The stun of £4 will feed, clothe, house and train a Chinese child for a year. “A local committee has been set up to assist, and as chairman of that committee I commend the appeal to the generosity of the people of Timaru who have always shown themselves willing to support any deserving cause. “The undermentioned donations have already been received, and I appreciate your co-operation in agreeing to acknowledge any further contributions. These may be paid either to me personally, or at the office of the Timaru Borough Council.” Subscription List
