TEMUKA MAY COMPETE AT CONTEST

Highland Pipe Band’s Success Executive to Meet Next Week It is understood that the Temuka Highland Pipe Band, following its success at the Canterbury Provincial Bands’ contest on Saturday, is considering competing at the Dominion contest for pipe bands at Christchurch in March. On Saturday the band won the Sinclair Shield for the winning B grade band, and if it competes at Christchurch it will be as a B grade combination. The Temuka Band last competed in a Dominion contest at Timaru in March, 1937. The question of entering for the 1939 contest will be discussed at a meeting of the executive next week. If the committee decides to enter practices will continue without a break. SQUASH RACKETS CLUB FORMED AT PUBLIC WORKS CAMP A squash rackets club has been formed at the Public Works Department at Temuka. An excellent court has been constructed at the Camp and enthusiasm amongst members runs high. It has been decided to limit membership to employees of the Public Works Department, but visitors will be allowed to use the court on payment of a small fee. Members of a squash rackets club have agreed to give exhibition games on the court. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr T. G. Beck; club captain, Mr R. N. Clarke; secretary, and treasurer, Mr W. P. Noble, committee Messrs M. Reynolds, C. G. Stringer and S. Scott. CHURCH ARMY’S WORK VISIT OF CAPTAIN PEARCE Captain F. C. Pearce of the men’s training college at the New Zealand Church Army headquarters at Auckland visited Temuka this week and showed films of the Army’s work in New Zealand to a large audience in the Parish Hall. During the evening he made an appeal for more trainees for the Church Army work. Captain Pearce was welcomed to Temuka by the Vicar, Rev. L. A. Barnes, who thanked the Church Army for the assistance they had given in Temuka. Cadet V. Bunce of the Church Army who is at present stationed in Temuka outlined the training and life of a cadet. The visit of Captain Pearce is connected with the third anniversary of the inauguration of the Church Army in New Zealand. Before leaving for Ashburton he made films of Temuka and its surroundings and of the work of Cadet Bunce in the district.

BOBBY CALVES A total of 106 bobby calves was collected on Wednesday by lorries working under the South Canterbury Calf Export Committee. This brings the total collected this year 3608 against 3837 last year. In future collections will be made on Mondays only.
