FIRE IN SHOP

CHARGE OF ARSON ARISES By Telegraph—Press Association GORE, September 30. Marcelline Isabeth, an elderly widow in business as a ladies’ outfitter, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court today before Mr R. Abernethy, S.M., with alleged arson.

The police evidence was to the effect that fire had been discovered in the accused’s shop at Gore on July 31. The police found 11 causes of fire. The front and rear doors of the premises were locked and there were no marks on them. Firemen burst the doors and were greeted with a smell of kerosene. They found kerosene soaked material blazing in several places. One rack of frocks was destroyed.

Valuers said that the warehouse value of the goods after the fire was £lBl and the salvage value £lOB. An insurance clerk said that the stock and Fttings were insured for £790. The accused reserved her defence and was committed for trial at the Supreme Court. Invercargill, on November 1. Bail of £l5O was allowed.
