FAIRLIE MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB

Trophies Presented Successful Season Trophies and cups won by members of the Fairlie Miniature Rifle Club were presented at a social held on Wednesday night. The captain of the club (Mr W. H. Cook) presided and congratulated members and officers on completing another successful season in spite of many difficulties. The presentations were made by the patron (Mr J. Barron), who was commended for his interest in the affairs of the club. Mr Barron referred to the large number of valuable trophies to be distributed, there being two trophies each for most members, in addition to the cups for the four grades. The cups were won by the following: A grade, W. Dorman; runner-up, W. Whitehead. B grade, W. H. Cook; runner-up, J. Thompson. C grade, J. Gilmore; runner-up, V. Braddick. D grade, A. H. Saunders. In addition to winning the A grade challenge cup, W. Dorman also annexed the trophy for the seven best nights’ score and the silver rifle.

The following piembers received trophies: W. Close (2), W. H. Cook (2), W. Whitehead (2), J. Gilmore (2), H. Green (2), V. Braddick (2), A. H. Saunders (2), R. Fergusson (2), E. Pike, J. Thompson and W. Dorman (2). During the evening opportunity was taken to make a presentation of a box of cutlery to Rifleman Dorman in recognition of his recent marriage. TENNIS CLUB ANNUAL REPORT In the annual report of the Falrlle Tennis Club, it is stated that the membership remained at 55, and that an appreciable increase was shown in the number of young players. During the year club competitions, with the exception of the men’s singles, were finalised, the winners being: \ omen's singles, Miss I. Lyons; women's doubles. Miss P. Collins and Miss McLean; Banks’ combmed doubles, W. B. Trotter and Miss J. Seay; men’s doubles, A. H. and P. D. Carlton. Friendly matches were played under the auspices of the Tengawai SubAssociation, as follows: Pleasant Point, Cave, Totara Valley and Albury. Honours broke about even. At the close of the season the Association made the courts the centre for a successful tournament, during which an exhibition of good tennis was witnessed. Prior to the opening of the season, the wire netting enclosures around the courts were renewed. Another decided Improvement was the replacement of the umpire stands. Trophies and donations were given by Messrs R. L. Banks and R. Seay, and the late Mr H. A. LeCren. The relatives of the late Mrs and Mr H. A. LeCren had the club’s deepest sympathy in their bereavement. Mr LeCren was a foundation member of the club and his loss would be keenly felt. As the winter was severe, the surface of the courts had been greatly affected and it was recommended by the committee that the club should go into the question of relaying. The retiring president, officers and committee wished to thank all those members who had worked together and helped to make the year one of real progress. PERSONAL Mrs A. Creighton has returned to Fairlie after a long holiday in Nelson. “Anyone oblige with a fill?" he asked with an ingratiating smile as he entered the club smoke room. “Bally nuisance—left my- pouch in my other coat." No one “obliged" until a new member passed his pouch along “Who’s that bloke?” he asked when the “ab-sent-minded beggar” had left the room. “That’s the club cadger," said somebody, “tons ot oof but never buys tobacco if he can cadge it. Hell smoke anything, but his particular weakness is Toasted Cut Plug No. 10." “Same here,” said the new member with a laugh, “I smoke it because I can’t get anything else so good, but by jove, I wish I’d known about that blighter! I’ve no time for cadgers!” And everybody laughed. Most smokers, as it happens, have a "particular weakness” for “toasted.” Hence the run on all five blends—Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Cavendish, Riverhead Gold and Desert Gold. They’re not only famous for flavour and bouquet but owing to being toasted (by the manufacturers’ exclusive process) are the purest and least harmful of all tobaccos
