GERALDINE TENNIS CLUB

Affiliation with Association A Grade Entry A decision to affiliate with the South Canterbury Tennis Association and to enter an A grade team in the Association’s competition was made at the annual meeting of the Geraldine Tennis Club. The president (Dr. L. C. Mail) presided over a fair attendance of members. It was decided to open the season tomorrow. Officers were elected as follows: Patron, Mr J. R. Lack; president, Dr. L. C. Mall; vice-presidents, Messrs A. B. Lane, A. H. Gimson, H. W. W. Williamson, Mesdames A. L. Brenton, E. P. S. Bennett and Miss E. L. J. Davies; secretary, Mr J. Wylde Browne; treasurer, Mr P. Callanan; club captain, Mr C. L. Stringer; woman secretary, Miss Joan Lapthorn: committee, Messrs A. H. Steward, P. Finch, L. Sharman, H. Bell, H. Collins, Misses J. Hislop, D. M. Galloway, H. Richards, Jill Lapthorn, W. Bird; auditor, Mr W. J. Rule; delegates to the South Canterbury Association, Messrs Oxford and Barr. Resignations were received from Mr and Mrs E. J. Wood and Misses Eileen Bennett and Madeline Kennedy. It was agreed to send a letter to Miss Kennedy thanking her for past services as women’s secretary. The following new members were elected; Misses O. Lewis, Joan McKechnie, Stevenson, I. Allan, Nurse Love, Messrs C. Small, R. Brenton, V. Bishop, P. Finch and L. Sharman. TOURNAMENT DANCE A credit balance of £3/15/4 from the recent tournament dance with reported at a meeting of the Ladies Committee of the Geraldine Football Club. Mrs W. H. Morris presided and others present were Mesdames P. Hendry, J. Gale, S. A. Turner, N. Brown, F. Sherratt, J. Powell, G. Womer and Misses T. Rule and J. Powell. The committee expressed thanks to all who had assisted to make the function a success. BASKETBALL School basketball matches were played by the secondary department of the Geraldine .District High School against the Fairlie District High School. The A grade resulted in a win for Geraldine by 17-15. The B grade match was won by Geraldine ly 12 goals to 7. Miss Sylvia Powell and Miss D. M. Galloway refereed the matches. “THE HOLY TERROR” Jane Withers in “The Holy Terror” will be seen at the Geraldine Municipal Theatre to-night and tomorrow night. In this latest and gayest fun-feast of her career, involving her in hilarious doings with the navy, the young "mad-cap" is ably supported by Anthony Martin, Leah Ray, Joan Wavis, El Prendel and Joe Lewis. As the pet of the Navy Air Base, Joan gets into such mischief that Anthony Martin, a sailor, is assigned to look after her. The -mgelfaced imp sings her way into trouble, and dances her way right out again. The Geraldine District Golf Club’s annual prize day will be held tomorrow. Mr Stanley H. Mayne, F.S.M.C., F. 1.0. (London), representing Procter’s, the Premier Opticians, Christchurch, will be visiting Geraldine on Wednesday.
