TECHNICAL SCHOOL STEEPLECHASE
F. Dore Wins Senior Championship Improved Times By two yards F. Dore, winner of last year's Junior championship, beat H. Williams to win the Timaru Technical High School two and two-third miles senior steeplechase championship yesterday afternoon. Ninety-five runners faced the starter, 84 completing the course in under the standard time of 25 minutes. Keen competition and spirited finishes, even among the minor placlngs, were a feature of the race. Improved times were recorded and the race was conducted under excellent conditions. Dore completed the distance in 17min. 5 2-ssec. The Junior championship was won by J. A. Edgeler, whose time was 17min. 39sec. T. Scarf (4min 20sec) won the senior, and E. T. Falvey (4min. 15sec.) the Junior handicap. The teams’ competition was won by Wanaka House with 158 points. The course was from the intersection of Browne Street and Craigie Avenue, along the Avenue to King Street, thence to Saltwater Creek, where the competitors cut across country to the westward, finally emerging on to Otpua Road. The course then followed along Woodlands Road, Hassall Street and Craigie Avenue, back to the starting point. The field set off at a smart pace, but the senior competitors gradually forged ahead and the runners straggled out in a long thin line. When Craigie Avenue was reached, G. Tubb led the field with F. Dore in close attendance, and Rankin, Vernall, H. Williams and Hubbard followed in that order. By the time Saltwater Creek was reached Borman had forged ahead, but Tubb was still handy, with Williams, Marcells and Torepe not far away. Burt, who was running steadily, was coming up some distance further back.
On entering Newton Street Dofe was in front, closely attended by Borman, Williams and Brown, but by that time Tubb had fallen back to sixth place.
The pace increased along Hassall Street where Williams and Dore were together at the head of the field. The distance had already told on the younger competitors and the field was then spread over a long distance. Riddle, who had made a fine spurt to overtake a number of the runners, was then in third place, while further back Rankin and Leary were doing their utmost to get among the placed competitors, but in the home run Dore got in two yards .ahead of Williams, with Riddle some distance back.
