WONDERFUL CURE
POWER OF NEW DRUG EXPERIMENTS IN ENGLAND LONDON, September 12. Striking proof of the curative power of the new drug, “M and B 693,” has been given in a case at Wolverhampton of pneumococcal meningitis. The death-rate from this disease is considered to be practically 100 per cent, but the drug cured a seven-years-old girl patient It belongs to the sulphanilanide group. Experiments with it by Dr L. E. H, Whitby were so convincing that the Wolverhampton Hospital sought a trial supply from the manufacturers. Twelve hours after the first dose the young patient was sent home, and in a few days she was completely cured. The director of the pathological department of the hospital, writing to the Lancet, states that the response was dramatic and left little room for doubt of the drug’s efficacy. Clinical tests with “M and B 693" are being made to Australia. The drug is essentially sulphonomide combined with pyridine. It was originated in England and is regarded as still in the experimental stage. Supplies for experimental use arc being given to hospitals, and the drug is not yet for general sale. Tests in Britain suggest that it should be oi great value in treatment of pneumococcal Infections, especially lobar pneumonia.
