Interest shown by Miss Ruth Draper, the American character actress when in Auckland in the work being carried on to assist crippled children, has resulted in her forwarding to the Auckland Hospital Board a draft for £25. The engament is announced of Eileen Marie, only daughter of Mrs and the late James Sullivan, Timaru, and Ernest Augustine, youngest son of Mrs and the late William Malone, Dunedin. Mrs Richard Hudson, Dunedin, left London on Thursday last to join the Strathallan at Marseilles. After spending 10 days in Perth as the guest of her sister, Mrs John Barnett, she will come on to New Zealand by the Strathmore, arriving in Dunedin on November 18. A memorial in honour of overseas nurses who died during the Great War while serving with the forces of the Empire will be unveiled when the new nurses’ house is opened next month at the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital for women and children, Euston Road, London. Mr and Mrs D. Clive Crozier (Christchurch), who are visiting Britain, will leave Southampton on October 13 by the Rangitata on their return journey to New Zealand. They spent August travelling in Devon and Cornwall and this month they have been in Scotland, where they will attend the launching ceremony of the Queen Elizabeth. When conducting the Timaru Orchestral Society at its concluding concert of the season in the Theatre Royal on Monday night, the conductor (Mr R. J. Simpson) used a baton which was kindly loaned to him for the occasion by Mrs N. D. Mangos. The baton, which was presented to Mrs Mangos two year's ago by the South Canterbury Women’s Glee Club, is much treasured by her and her action was a very fine gesture, and typified the great interest she has always taken in the welfare of the Society. The triennial conference of the Associated Country Women of tire World, an organisation which embraces all tlie country women’s associations in 29 different nations, will take place in London next year. The Importance of such a conference need not be stressed. At the last one, held in Washington, U.S.A., where the President of the United States and Mrs Roosevelt opened the proceedings, and subsequently entertained the visitors at the largest party ever held in the official residence, there were 8000 delegates. At the next conference a large attendance is again expected, including a number of delegates from New Zealand. Apart from the valuble work done at the conference, there is no doubt that the participation of the women of this country will be of value to New Zealand as a whole, and will do much to bring about a better understanding among the women of the various countries.
