TEMUKA UNIFORMITY OF HOLIDAYS

Progress League Not Concerned “Not a Businessmen’s Association” Expressing surprise that the businessmen of Temuka had looked to the Progress League for the fixing of uniformity in the observance of public holidays in Temuka, Mr T. B. Edwards, the secretary, said yesterday that the League was not a businessmen’s association but an organisation working for the benefit of the surrounding district. Several businessmen had complained that the matter was one for the League to consider and the lack of unanimity in the observance of Dominion Day was regarded by some as a fault of the League. When the League was approached on a similar matter on a previous occasion it had attempted to form a sub-com-mittee of businessmen to thrash out such questions but owing to the lack of co-operation or interest on the part of the businessmen the attempt had been a failure. Therefore the League had decided that in future all such questions could be settled by the businessmen themselves without any resort to the assistance of the League. It was, said Mr Edwards, amazing that any blame for the way in which the holiday on Monday had been conducted should be placed on the Progress League which had done all possible to organise a committee which could have amicably settled all holiday and other questions relating to the welfare of the business people of the town. LAWN TENNIS CLANDEBOYE CLUB A successful season was reviewed in the annual report of the Clandeboye Tennis Club read at the annual meeting held recently.
