ICE CARNIVAL

TASMAN DOWNS SCHOOL The Tasman Downs School situated as it is in the highlands of the Mackenzie Country, is probably unique among New Zealand schools in that it possesses its own skating rink. Here the children spend all their play hours, so that it is not surprising that they are as much at home on the ice as on the land. On Friday an ice carnival was held. As snow was falling for the eighteenth time this winter on the previous day, deep gloom settled upon the children. However, Friday was perfect with warm, brilliant sunshine and not a breath of wind. The bright scarlet jumpers of the school uniform made a striking picture against the dazzling white snow surrounding the rliik. An early lunch was served after which parents, friends and children made their way to the ice. A most interesting event to the spectators was the figure skating competition where children from six to 13 years entered. The children of this school are fortunate in having Miss May Cassie as their coach. Miss Lucy Wills, Tekapo Station, kindly judged the competition. The results were as follows.— 10-13 years—Jean Cassie 1, Joan Trott and David Cassie equal 2, Margaret Morgan 3. 6-9 years—Shirley Buchanan 1, Penelope Rich 2, Sally Jamieson 3. During the carnival, team games in which all skaters young and old participated gave much enjoyment. The following events took place.— Egg and Spoon Race —Una Green 1, Margaret Morgan 2. Musical Chairs—Sally Jamieson 1, David Cassie 2. Bottle Race—Bruce Hayman 1, Mrs Bruce Murray 2. Wheel Barrow Race—Bruce Hayman and Jennifer Murray 1, Jean Cassie and Una Green 2. Biscuit and Song Race—Mrs Gerald Murray and Bruce Hayman 1, Penelope Rich and David Cassie 2, Rosemary Murray and Helen Cassie 3. Orange on Head Race—Adults: George Cassie and Bruce Hayman equal 1, Miss Lucy Wills 3. Children: D. Cassie 1, Joan Trott 2, Jean Cassie 3. Skating Backwards—Adults: G. Cassie 1, Helen Cassie 2. Children: J. Cassie 1, Sally Jamieson 2.

Balloon Race—Penelope Rich and David Cassie 1, Helen Cassie and Margaret Morgan 2. Potato Race —Shirley Buchanan 1, Geraldine Murray 2.

After afternoon tea, appreciation of their good time was expressed to Mr and Mrs Hayman, the host and hostess.
