AUSTRALIA’S TRADE
NEGOTIATIONS IN CANADA AND UNITED STATES United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph —Copyright QUEBEC, August 5. Dr. Earle Page has arrived. He is leaving for Ottawa to-morrow. In an inter, lew with the Australian Associated Press Dr. Page said he would hold informal conversations with representatives of the Canadian and American Governments, regarding trade with Australia. From Ottawa came a report that the foundation of a new AustralianCanadian trade agreement may be laid
by Dr. Page’s talks with Mr Mackenzie King (Prime Minister of Canada), and Mr Euler.
Partial revision of the agreement last October left many questions for further consideration. Although tomorrow’s conversations will be informal, it is believed a beginning may be made on a_ entirely new agreement. It is also expected that the Ministers will discuss the progress of the Washington negotiations regarding an Anglo-American reciprocal agreement, in order to attempt to agree on a common attitude concerning it.
According to trade experts here the difficulty of bringing Australian and Canadian trade closer to balance, is due to Australia’s heavy na’.’.ral demand for Canadian products, while Canada’s consumptive capacity for Australian products has been nearly reached.
Discussing Australian - Canadian trade with Mr Mackenzie King at Ottawa, Dr. Earle Page pointed out that Canada was selling two and a half times wl.at it was buying from Australia.
