Rotorua Leaves Caracas The New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the Rotorua left Caracas Bay on Monday afternoon. She sailed from Wellington on June 6 and is due at London on July 26. Kakariki Salvage The timber superstructure being built around the bridge of the sunken Kakariki, the steamer which for 16 months has been at rest on the bottom of Port Phillip, south of Gelllbrand Light, was completed at the end of June, enabling the bridge superstructure to be pumped dry of water. Captain W. Harrison, who is in charge of operations, said that everything was going to schedule, and the vessel would be raised exactly four months from May 16, when the work first began. Lome of the timber and drums to assist in the actual raising of the vessel have been taken to the scene.

Freighter as Cable Ship It was expected that the actual task of recovering the damaged telephone submarine cable between Tasmania and the mainland of Australia would be begun at the end of June (says the "Argus”). The inter-State freighter Mernoo has been chartered by the Postmaster-General’s Department for the work, and engineers and shipwrights will begin the work of converting her into a cable repair ship. Special accommodation will be fitted for telephone engineers. A giant hydraulic crane will be used to hoist aboard the cable winch and the bow sheaves which, together, weigh 13 tons.
