FAIRLIE MACKENZIE “BAY”

Committee Receives Congratulations “WONDERFUL RESOURCES” Several letters of congratulation on the success obtained at the South Canterbury Winter Show, were read at a meeting on Wednesday afternoon, of the committee which organised the Mackenzie “bay.” A letter from the Mayor of Waimate (Mr George Dash) stated: “Waimate would offer hearty congratulations to your committee on the excellent exhibit created and the success attending it at the hands of the judges. That in your first effort in this Winter Show competition you should carry off first honours must be gratifying, and to us indicates that your County has wonderful resources in both material and endeavour.” A telegram of congratulation was received from Mrs W. T. Taylor, chairwoman of the Levels “Bay” Committee, and letters were sent by the Fairlie Women’s Institute and Mr H. Tritt. Those present at the meeting were: Messrs C. J. Talbot (chairman), H. A. Munro, K. Anderson, W. Close, C. Carney, W G. Black, A. Freme, H G. Shanks and D. Jeune (secretary), and Mesdames W. H. Hammond and E. J. Robertson. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £2/6/1, and the total expenditure was £24/14/5. Receipts were made up of a donation from the Mackenzie County Council of £5, the Mackenzie A. and P. Society £5, Mr C. J. Talbot £l, the Winter Show Committee £lO and a guessing competition organised by Mrs Hammon £5/10/6. On the expenditure side, the largest item was timber costing £7/8/9. In expressing gratification at the success the County had achieved, Mr Talbot said one of the outstanding features of the “bay” had been that everything was arranged according to classes. He would like to mention the fine services given by Mr Close as supervisor. The few who had attended the first meeting of the committee had undertaken a large responsibility in starting the “bay” and it had been satisfactory to see that their confidence had been justified. The result had brought the county into prominence,

as well as had the snowfalls experienced in recent weeks. There was no doubt that the snow had made a vigorous and energetic people. He concluded by paying a tribute to the work done by Mr Jeune.

In mentioning the great assistance the committee had received from all parts of the County, Mr Jeune said Mr Rollinson had carted material to Timaru free of cost, the C.F.C.A. had lent a van both to down and bring back goods, Mr T. Tritt had iced the cake made by Mrs Hammond, and in different ways numerous helpers had contributed to the success of the “bey.”

The sum ol £3/3/- will be received as first prize in the competition, in addition to the cup. and it was decided to set the money asid so that the purchase of some permanent record could be considered. Mr Close undertook to organise the “bay” again next year provided arts and crafts were omitted and it was decided to appoint him organiser for 1939. A recommendation is to be made to the Winter Show executive that separate “bays” should be included for arts and crafts. A cake guessing competition was won by John Sadler, Fairlie.
