CHURCH SOCIALS
PRESBYTERIAN YOUNG PEOPLE The fortnightly social of the young people of the Temuka Presbyterian Church was held on Wednesday night. The evening was spent in games and competitions. At a suitable interval Mrs G. A. Davey made a presentation to Miss S. Timblick, a member of the Bible Class, who is leaving to go nur- I sing in Waimate. St. Joseph’s Gathering The popularity of the St. Joseph's , socials was amply demonstrated at the i function held on Wednesday evening. 1 Winners at cards were Miss Edna McGarva and Mrs A. Fisher and Messrs ■ J. O'Connell and J. Mclntosh. A Monte I Carlo waltz was'won by Mrs C. Double I and Mr H. Wilson. Mesdames L. F. i Robins and L. J. Wareing were hos- I tosses for the evening. “SPARKLES” Jessie Matthews’ new scintillating musical, “Sparkles” lias been once again directed by Sonnie Hale, who is shewing no signs of returning to acting for his many fans. His decision to ictire and direct films only was a sad blow to most picturegoers, but his productions are more than making up for this. In ".Sparkles'’—Jessie Matthews has never been seen to better advantage—she sings and dances more divinely than ever, and the story and dialogue have more than usual brightness and opportunities for your fav- I ourite musical star. All this, we think, through the excellent direction of Sonnie Hale. Also in the cast of this G.B.D. release are Barry Mackay, opposite Jessie. Nat Pendleton, Noel Madison, and Olive Blakeney. Tile whole picture sparkles from beginning Io finish, and all who have seen it predict even linger popularity for our Jessie. Coining to the Elite Theatre to-night.
