LABOUR AND THE SOVIET

To che Editor ot '* The Timaru Herald Sir,—Your correspondent ‘‘Audrey Cunninghame” is clearly one of those simple people who are easily bluffed. He says he resents the suggestion that Labour is not 100 per cent loyal and religious. Perhaps he has not noticed that whenever an election is approaching Labour is prepared to be all things to all men. I would say to Mr Cunninghame that he ought to look at things with his eyes open, and then ask himself a few questions. The first question I would like to ask Mr Cunninghame is: Why does Labour always soft-pedal on Socialism when an election is in the air? Why does Labour not always wear its true colours? I do not mean the rank and file of the workers but the political leaders. Do you hear us Mr Cunninghame? If you do, will you tell its why ths Easter conference of the New Zealand Party attended by Ministers of the Crown, concluded its deliberations by singing not the National Anthem but the Red Flag? Will Mr Cunninghame tell us who is the chairman of the Policy Committee of the New Zealand Party? Is it Mr W. Nash? Will Mr Cunninghame tell us if this is the same Mr Nash who following the death of that monster Lenin despatched the following message to the Soviet Government: ‘‘New Zealand Labour Party sends sincere sympathy to Russian Government and people on passing of great leader Lenin?” Will Mr Cunninghame say if there Is any connection between the telegram of condolence and expressions of sympathy on th? part of Labour at the passing of the Red Leadei, the visit of Mr Nash to Moscow last year, the singing of the Red Flag at the Labour Conference in 1938. and the part played by Mr Nash as chairman of the Policy Committee of the New Zealand Labour Party?—l am, etc., ANTI-RED. Timaru, July 13.
