GRANT CUT OUT

Timaru Technical College Board of Managers Meet The monthly meeting of the Board of Managers of the Timaru Technical College was held last night. Present —Mr G. Benstead (chairman). Mrs S. Unwin and Messrs P. R. Talbot, W. E. Tubb, A. S. Kinsman, J. Palliser, J. Keenan, C. H. Johnson and W. J. Dickson. The chairman extended a welcome to Mr Kinsman as the representative of the Timaru Borough Council, and said that he was sure Mr Kinsman would prove a valuable member of the Board.

The Town Clerk, Timaru, advised that the Council, when framing its estimates, had decided to cut out the annual grant to the school, it being considered that the matter was entirely one for the education authorities. It was also pointed out that now that additional property had been purchased for the school the Council would would lose a certain amount in rates.

The chairman: That won’t make them bankrupt.

Mr Talbot suggested that the Council should again be written to asking them to reconsider their decision. The secretary (Mr Tuck) remarked that the Council for years had granted £5O, but during the depression, this had been reduced to £2O. Mr Kinsman asked whether some assistance could be obtained from the Department, but Mr Tuck said that the property referred to in the Town Clerk’s letter was one purchased by the Department at the corner of Theodocia Street for £l5OO. The Department had a building scheme in view for the school, which provided for a new entrance off Theodocia Street and when the building scheme was commenced, the corner section would be brought in. Unt.l such time as building was commenced, the Department would draw whatever revenue there was to be had from the property.

Mr Kinsman: By way of interest on the £1500?

Mr Tuck: Exactly. We can’t expect anything from that quarter. It was agreed to ask the Council to reconsider its decision, and the chairman and principal are to make a personal appeal to the Council. Centennial Exhibition The Education Department ad’ ised that exhibits would be invited from schools for the Centennial Exhibition. The space allotted to schools would be small and that for technical schools would probably not exceed 3000 square feet. It was asked that an indication be given this month as to whether the school would contribute to the exhibit. It was agreed that the school should contribute to the exhibit. Principal’s Report The principal (Mr F. L. N. T- 'O said that on the full-time roll in the Technical High School at present there were 106 girls and 138 boys, a total of 244. The average attendance had been 226 or 91.5 per cent. The e”ening class enrolments were:— Accountancy 20, Commercial 167, Art :id Domestic 28, Trades 149, and General 16. a total of 380. The report dealt with visits paid by pupils to the exhiI bition of the Coronation robes, the Indian hockey match and the writer show. It was also mentioned that Mr E. A. Harrison, an English grinding expert from Stafford, had visited the

school and had given a most inter sting and instructive lecture on ths manufacture and application of grinding wheels and explained the diverse purposes and the precautions t r ba taken for the safe use of this invaluable modern tool. The bad weather had adversely ffected attendance at evening classes. The total evening roll was 45 in advance of that at the same time last y?ar. Regular transfers were received from the three local High Schools as pupils left to enter employment, aided

the freer regulations issued last year for the tenure of free places. A new class recently formed was the first of two to be held in invalid cookery for hospital nurses. The report was adopted.
