MATAMATA R.C.

HANDICAPS The following handicaps for the Matamata Racing Club’s meeting, to be held on July 23, have been declared as follows: — PERIA HACK AND HUNTERS' STEEPLECHASE, Of £150; about 21 miles

season K. Voitre was first with 123 winners and L. J. Ellis second with 63. The following season L. J. Ellis finished first with 83, Voitre being second with 75, and Broughton third with 59. Ellis again finished on top in 1934-35 with 93 wins, W. J. Broughton being second with 85, while in 1935-36 he again headed the list with 72, B. H. Morris being second with 56. Last season Broughton was first with 63 wins, and C. G. Goulsbro second with 50. Then came A. E. Ellis and B. H. Morris 44, P. Burgess 42, P. Atkins 40, and L. J. Ellis 39. Last season L.J. experienced eye trouble, and was idle for some months.

Bob Lewis, the Victorian Jockey whose "retirement” is announced at the age of 59, had done very little actual riding for several years, and his sun commenced to set when he was beaten on Phar Lap in Nightmarch’s Melbourne Cup eight or nine years ago. For a long period, from 1895 onwards, Lewis was associated with James Scobie’s stable, and at one time held a retainer from Sir Rupert Clarke. He rode in about 25 Melbourne Cups, winning four, and had an extraordinary record of success in classic events. Six V.R.C. Derbies, four A.JIC. Derbies, four A.J.C. St. Legers, nine Ascot Vale Stakes, five V.R.C. Sires Produce Stakes, and four Oaks, all on horses from Scobie’s stable, are indicative of the record of Lewis in set weight events, and he was equally successful in handicaps. Lewis is believed to be the wealthiest racing professional in the Commonwealth, and some years ago was reputed to be worth over £lOO,OOO. Lewis made a trip to England, to ride for J. E. Brewer, an Australian trainer, but did not stay there long.
