LONG LIFE AS JOCKEY BOBBIE LEWIS RETIRES United Pres? Association— By Electric Telegraph Copyright MELBOURNE, July 9. L. R. (Bobbie) Lewis, Australia's most famous jockey, has retired at the age of 59. He began riding when he was 11 and has ridden winners of most of the important races in Australia. He holds the Melbourne Cup record with four wins. An additional 101 b to carry over an extra half mile pulled up Full o’ Scotch in the Winter Hurdles, and enabled Courtyard to reverse the Trentham Hurdles order. The penalty was the most substantial yet imposed on the first day winner, and Full o’ Scotch was by no means disgraced. Courtyard, who is prepared by A. McMullan, was originally trained at Woodville by F. Davis, and a four-figure cheque was involved in his transfer to S. G. Waer's stable at Wingatui. He developed unsoundness and was a comparative failure. D. O'Connor later had a turn with him and introduced him to the jumping business but Courtyard displayed no liking for it, and his recent sudden development into a star hurdler has been one of the main surprises of the winter. Taking charge after jumping the first fence, All Irish was never afterwards challenged in the July Steeplechase at Trentham, and giving a mag- | nificent display of jumping the Auck- i lander won by half a dozen lengths 1 from Clarion Call, who was casing up | nearly 20 lengths ahead of Monastic and Bryce Street. Kinkle was going well when he crashed at the stand double the second time. Power Chief was in third place when he fell with two fences to go, but was tiring at the time. Clarion Call jumped equally as well as All Irish until going along the back the last time when he cracked a board fence hard. At the time he was only two lengths behind the winner, but the mistake took a lot of steam out of him and left him without a challenge.
