NOTES ON THE RACING

Favourite Falls Backers started badly when Valarth. a hot favourite, came down at the first hurdle, interfering with Sunder, who lost his rider. It was at this hurdle that Sunder fell on the opening day. L. Dulieu being severely injured. Greek Arma soon ran to the front, Laggard Lustral. Chaste, King Mestor and Contract following. Curie moved up along the back. Greek Arma retired half a mile from home. Curie beating Laggard. King Mestor and Contract to the home turn. Curie, improved by his earlier races, stayed on to beat Contract, with Laggard and King Mestor next, both tiring. Lustral dropped out

a long way from home. The Novices Great Legion, a well backed two-year-old having his first race at the meeting, set a solid pace from Proclamation and St. Cedric in the Novice Handicap, but the first-named pair collapsed after half a mile. Bluffer and Sly Fox joined in at this stage, Bluffer winning decisively while Sly Fox outstayed Proclamation for second. Yours Truly was close up. then Keen Sight. These two-year-olds will do much better in the spring. The winner is a two-year-old filly by Nigger Minstrel, her dam Bravado being closely related to Bobrikoff. Finmark and Estland. She won two small races for Mr T. H. Lowry last season but he sold her recently, her form this season having been poor.

Winner Jumps Well All Irish led practically all the way to win the July Steeplechase in which he gave a good exhibition of jumping. Clarion Call joined him five furlongs from home but hit a board fence hard and the ground he lost may have cost him the race as he was going on well in the straight. Power Chief, always well placed, was third when he fell at the second last fence. Monastic then took third place and outstayed Bryce Street who dropped back in the last mile but came on again in the run home. His jumping was not good. Kinkle was second when he fell a round from home, but Kahunoke was a long way back when he fell with seven furlongs to go. So was Chile when he came down at the next fence. Clarion Call should run well on firmer ground at Riccarton. Gold Glare Easily Hunting Chorus, Golden Ridge, and Jazz Boy led from the start of the Crofton Handicap, Flying Acre, Jan Ridd, Advance Plane and Gay Hunting being handy at the end of three furlongs, while Gold Glare moved up at the entrance to the straight. Jazz Boy, Advance Plane and Flying Acre were in charge a furlong from the post, with Gay Hunting also moving up. Gold Glare then shot through and won easily from Advance Plane who beat

Gay Hunting narrowly. Jan Ridd was next, then Philemup and Jazz Boy. Winter Hurdles Full o’ Scotch tried to win all the way in the Winter Hurdles but the task just beat him. Middle and Charade joined him after two furlongs but with a mile gone Full o’ Scotch and Charade were clear of Courtyard and Middle, with Donegal next. Charade blundered leaving the straight and again at the seven furlong post, where he retired. At this stage Southern Blood j challenged Full o’ Scotch, while Aurora's Love took third place, Courtyard and Erination being next. Southern Blood dropped out at the far turn, Aurora’s Love and Full o' Scotch going on from Courtyard, with Erina- | tion drifting back. Courtyard followed the two leaders to the last hurdle and I then cleared out, winning easily. Full ■ o’ Scotch outstayed Aurora’s Love, who : just stalled off a late challenge from j Erination. The others were well beaten. ; Chaste had her second race of the day 1 and tailed the field. Courtyard was ' very confidently ridden by G. Ridgway. ; Monipere’s Great Run Sweet Rose and Enge soon took the

lead in the Winter Oats Handicap, Liane and Lady Montana being at the head of the others after two furlongs, with Monipere and Ned Cuttie also handy. The last-named pair lost their places a litle further on. Alma then moved up, also Airam, who had got i out badly, and these two followed Enge, Sweet Rose and Lady Montana to the straight. Monipere then started a great run on the rails and taking the lead inside the distance, he won easily from Liane, while Ned Cuttie was close up, coming with a late run to cut Enge out of third. Airam was next, a good performance. Alma failed badly over the final furlong. A Good Effort Superior Guard and Farland were best out in the Onslow Handicap, Rebel Mate, Thala and Maori Song following them for half a mile, where Rollicker joined in. Rebel Mate and Rollicker drew clear on reaching the straight and fought out a great finish, with Rebel Mate getting the advantage in

the last few strides. It was a good effort but Rollicker’s turn will come soon. Prince Acre, slow to begin, came with a late rush to cut Thala out of third money. Paper Slipper was close up, a great improvement on Thursday’s form. The Finale El Meynell, a very hot favourite, was in front practically all the way in the Kia Ora Handicap, Silver Fox attending him to the home turn, with Warehi, Hamarin, Sunbeam, Rotoma and Tidewaiter handy. El Meynell, taken out wide in the straight, won with ridiculous ease. Rotoma and Warehi filled the places, outstaying the others. Sunbeam stopped badly in the run home. Tidewaiter, Happy Landing and Auto Sweep were next. (Continued on Page 11)
