IMPORTED COSMETICS
RETAIL PRICES HIGHER Increases of from 5 to 40 per cent, in ’the retail prices of Australian cosmetics and toilet requisites have occurred as a result of the New Zealand tariff revision last April. Australia provides a large proportion oi New Zealand's requirements, and about 20 lines in general use are affected. Prices quoted by chemists showed that certain lines of face cream have risen from 3,6 to 4/-, face powders from 1 - to 1/3, perfumes from 5/6. to 6 and shaving creams from 2/6 to 36. Various types ol toilet soaps are now from 5 to 25 per cent, dearer. Cosmetics and toilet goods manufactured m New Zealand were restri ted to about eight lines in general use. it was stated, and the riff would therefore not help local manufacturers. Agreement was expressed with a Wellington opinion that the tariff “was just another mistake of the Government in trying to help local manufacturers at the expense cf the people,” for it was obvious that the purchaser would have to bear the brunt of the increases on the Australian lines.
