WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

PAREORA EAST Mrs Whitticase presided over a fair attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Pareora East Women's Institute. Misses P. Barr and M. Hurst were proposed for membership. Arrangements were completed for the birthday party, the Misses J. Munro and L. Coote to arrange the programme. An invitation to St. Andrews birthday party was received and accepted. It was decided to send a letter of congratulation to Esk Valley on its success at the recent drama festival at St. Andrews. Girls from the upper standards at the local school were admitted to watch the demonstration of making cellophane belts and haloes given by Miss Kinross. Miss Lange proposed a vote of thanks to Miss Kinross, which was carried by acclamation. A game was won by Miss L. Coote. The results of the afternoon's competitions were as follows. —Specimen bloom: Miss P. Whitticase (chrysanthemum) 1 and 2. Bowl of flowers: Miss P. Whitticase 1, Mrs Anderson 2. Thrift article: Mrs Judge (rug from unravelled wool) and Mrs R. Depree (cushion from felt) equal 1. Mrs Haywood (crochet cushion) 2. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Nelson.
