A Gruelling Game The match was extraordinarily tough. Twenty minutes before the end Porter and Conlon left the field injured but the Kiwis had the game in hand, leading by 25 points to eight. Later Coates was ordered off. New Zealand began with fire, but for a period in the first half it flickered out. Subsequently it burst into vivid flame. The visitors were the nippier side on the day. They tackled magnificently and their positional play was altogether superior to Saturday's. The forwards and backs combined splendidly. The try of the day originated in the New South Wales’ 25 when McLeod, Tittleton, Wilfred, Brimble, McLeod again, and Smith handled for the last named to cross in the corner. Hemi’s try was the result of a bluff from a penalty near the home goal line. He punted, gathered in the ball and crossed and converted. Williams later repeated the trick for New South Wales. Hemi had on his kicking boots, goaling eight of 10 attempts. Chase’s first-half try was a beautiful individual effort. He gathered the ball I following a dribbling rush and feinted I past Conlon and swerved inside Goodwin. who rushed across in a vain attempt to cut him off. The outstanding forward was McLeod, but McNeight, Brodrick, Tetley and Coates were conscientious ruckers. Orman was useful in all phases, but was outclassed in the League methods of hooking. Walter Brimble was again a grand tackler, regardless of the size of his opponents. He rendered excellent service from rucks. Wilfred Brimble was lively at first five-eighths. Chase played well at centre. Hemi was always safe, while both wings were superb. Comment On First Match “The Sydney Morning Herald" says: “The Kiwis made a splendid showing in their first match. They played sounder and more attractive football than the New South Wales team, for most of the match, and it was not until well Into the second half that the New Zealanders, who were then playing a man short, were overwhelmed by the superior weight of the New South Wales men. The New Zealand forwards fought a grand losing battle. Cootes to-night was severely cautioned by the Rugby League. Another Match Suggested The manager of the Kiwis suggests that in view of New Zealand’s showing another Saturday match be arranged at the conclusion of the tour, at Sydney, either against an Australian or New South Wales side. The New Zealanders entrained for Lismore to-night.
