TREE PLANTNG
LEVELS COUNTY INTERESTED The Levels County Council was advised by Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P.. at its monthly meeting yesterday, to endeavour to obtain control over an abandoned section of about 200 acres near Claremont on the shaded bank of the Pareora river. Mr Burnett said he had been told by the Minister of Lands (the Hon. F. Langstone) that the council could have it free of charge for tree-planting purposes. He said he would not recommend it if it were going to cost the county a penny, or as a commercial proposition, but it was of inesthnatable value for beautification. The council need not enter upon a tree-planting plan at once, but could simply take over the section and go ahead with its beautification when convenient. When Mr Burnett had retired the council briefly discussed the proposal, and decided to obtain reports from an expert on the suitability of the block and an estimate of the cost of planting it in trees. It was observed that the council would have to provide rabbit-proof fences and plough the land for firebreaks.
