THE CENTENARY

HUGE SCOUT JAMBOKEL PLANNED

On Saturday morning those present at the third Dominion Rover Scout Moot had the pleasure of listening to Mr J. E. F. Vogel. Commissioner for Hutt Valley and Bays District, give an illuminating address on the International Scout Jamboree to be held in Wellington during the New Zealand Centenary celebrations.

Mr Vogel said it was possible that another jamboree would not be held in New Zealand for at least 10 years, and it was their duty as Rovers of New Zealand to make it an outstanding success from every point of view. Jamborees were run for the boy and the main aim was to get the boys of all nations and all districts fraternising with one another. He quoted an overseas authority who likened the jamboree to a shareholders’ meeting. A jamboree was for the benefit of not those organising it, but for the benefit of Scouting throughout the world. Their job was to help those isolated Scouts and Scouters to come to the jamboree. He gave instances of how the jamboree team had taken preliminary steps to arrange a flat rate for all New Zealand Scouts attending the jamboree.

The speaker emphasised the fact that the object of jamborees was to spread peace and good will and to consolidate Scouting. To accomplish this the co-operation of all the Rover Scouts throughout New Zealand was necessary. He detailed the organisation of the affair and told how the Rovers could and should prepare themselves for the manifold duties necessary to conduct a camp of more than 5000 Scouts.
