WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

KIMBELL Mrs Waters presided over a good attendance of members and visitors at the May meeting of the Kimbell Women’s Institute. Various matters bearing on the forthcoming conferences were discussed. An invitation, to the Sherwood social evening was received. Miss Smith gave an interesting demonstration of hair-pin work. Mesdames Waters (president), Fraser (secretary) and Baron (treasurer) were the recipients of gifts. In making the presentations Mrs Keenan referred to their zeal and efficiency, and credit was due to them for the success of the past year. After afternoon tea, dispensed by Mesdames Borland and Burgess, members enjoyed an informal social hour. The competitions resulted as follows: Bird (drawing): Miss Waters 1, Miss Durant 2. ROSEWILL At the April meeting of the Rosewiii Women’s Institute, Mrs Bailey presided over a good attendance. Mesdames Hart and Gill were appointed as delegates to the South Canterbury Federation in Geraldine. For the Dominion conference in Wellington, Miss M. Moore was appointed as delegate. A motion of sympathy was passed to Mrs Brosnahan in her recent illness.

A most enjoyable and interesting talk was given by Mrs Murray on the South Canterbury farmers" tour of Central Otago. The six months' competition resulted as follows. —Miss M. Moore 1. Miss N. Moore 2. Mrs Bailey 3. The month's competitions resulted is follows. — Premier bloom: Miss M. Moore 1. Miss N. Moore 2, Mrs Gill and Miss V. Beckingsale equal 3. Apple jelly: Mrs Gill 1, Mrs Moore 2. A sale's table was held in aid of the Maori Mission Fund. The hostesses competition was won by Mrs Stevens with Mrs Moore second. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs Baikie and Miss V. Beckingsale. SEADOWN The seventh annual meeting of the Seadown Women’s Institute was held in the school, Mrs J. McCully presiding over a good attendance. The annual report and balance-sheet revealed a successful year. Votes of tb"nks were passed to all who had given assistance. Mr W. Kennedy was also thanked for auditing the books. On vacating the chair. Mrs J. McCully thanked all members for their loyal support during the year. Mrs W. Cain then took the chair and the election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows. —President, Mrs J. Pemberton; secretary, Mrs L. Ward; treasurer. Mrs H. Brosnahan; vicepresidents, Mesdames W Cain and R. Hewson; sales table. Mrs W. Kennedy; competitions, Mrs J. Edgar; home and country, Mrs L. Ward; pianists, Mrs W. Smith and Miss M. McCully; correspondent, Miss S. Hide. The committee consists of the foregoing members and Mesdames Topham, Oldfield, McCully and Miss D. Brosnahan. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses Mesdames W. Cain and Dunnett.
