BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Geraldine Borough Council, held on Wednesday evening, was attended by the Mayor (Mr B. R. Macdonald) and Crs. J. R. Lack. H. Russell, A. J. Bell and Z. O. Sherratt. Before proceeding with the business the Council stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of Mr P. C. Vinnell, late Mayor of Timaru. The chairman of the Finance Committee, Cr. Lack, reported that the receipts totalled £689 9/11. Accounts for payment amounted to £64 17 1, leaving a debit balance of £1164 5 -7. Cr. Lack reported on behalf of a subcommittee appointed to wait on the Geraldine Volunteer Fire Brigade in regard to the purchase of new hose, and, on the committee's recommendation, it was agreed to purchase 200 ft. On the recommendation of the Works Committee it was decided that the two visiting motorists who had recently damaged the newly-laid asphalt track on the Domain Oval should pay for the cost of repairs. It was further decided to erect small fences on either side of the pavilion and a notice board prohibiting driving on the track. The secretary of the South Canterbury Hospital Board advised that owing to increased costs of construction of the new hospital buildings, the Geraldine Borough Council’s levy would be increased by £7 per annum during the 20 year term of the loan. Mrs H. Kelly wrote drawing the Council’s attention to the growth of blackberry and broom on the road side adjoining her property .at South Terrace, —Referred to Borough foreman. Mr T. H. Bannehr, secretary of the Geraldine District Nurse Committee, applied for the customary grant towards maintaining the service.—The application was held over till the estimates were considered. Miss A. Greaves was granted permission to install a septic tank and drain - age at the residence she was building at the corner of Peel and Lewis Streets. A building permit was granted to Mr M. Campbell. Dr. G. W. Curtis drew attention to the continued unsatisfactory state cf the stormwater creek running through his and Mrs Curtis's sections.—Referred to Works Committee. The secretary of the Employment Division, Department of Labour, wrote authorising the Council to commence work on the new water-main in Cox Street. The subsidy would be on the basis of 45/- a week for married men and 30/- a week for single men. Improvements To Baths The receipts in the Domain Board account amounted to £341/17/10, and the debit balance was shown at £271 11/5. The cemetery account showed that receipts amounted to £lO/17,--. The credit balance totalled £5l/9 -3. Mrs H. S. Ellis wrote expressing the thanks of the Geraldine Croquet Club for assistance and labour in cutting back the bank on the greens. The Under-Secretary, Department of Lands and Survey, Wellington, advised that a grant of £5O had been approv - ed towards the cost of improving the baths. On behalf of the Swimming Club Mr D. C. McKechnie explained that prices were being secured for the proposed improvements, and the Club would then notify the Domain Board accordingly.
