APPRECIATION OF TIMARU

To the Editor or “ The Timaru Herald ” Sir, —I have been travelling extensively throughout your wonderful country, and have been astonished at the scenery and modern conveniences, which New Zealand possesses at the present time. Even after seeing all the cities, I still say and always shall say, that Timaru; is the finest of them all. Its artistic scenery, its lovely homes, its Caroline Bay and your general outlay, is nowhere to be excelled throughout New Zealand and Australia. At the time I was visiting Timaru, I read in your papers of schemes of improving the Timaru harbour, so I walked down to your waterfront one day and I thought to myself: "Well, what a chance they have.” With your harbour very much improved, I cannot see any reason at all, why in twelve years, Timaru should not be the busiest place in the South Island and perhaps the biggest city also. Your harbour shall be a gateway to the Southern Alps and the lakes, and shall also bring in more direct lines with Britain. The Southern Alps I shall mention, has better scenery and atmosphere than Switzerland has, by a big margin, and so I shall try to suggest to the Timaru Borough to -wake up, and start things moving. I hope to visit Timaru again one of these years, and I sincerely hope I shall see a city of prosperous and busy people.—l am, etc.,
