ST. ANDREWS STOCK SALE The entries for the St. Andrews sale were the largest for the season. The fat sheep and lambs had to be sold before pens for store sheep could be found. Fat sheep, cattle and lambs sold at this week’s rates, but store sheep, especially good breeding ewes firmed fully 1/- a head on recent rates. The range was:— Fat Cattle

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received March 10, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, March 9. 1 Gold is quoted at £6/19/7 a fine oz. MINING NEWS By Telegraph Pres? Association GREYMOUTH, March 10. The Mossy Creek return is 20oz 9dwt for 127 hours’ work. The Blackball Creek dredge, formerly the Brian Born, which was removed to Blackball Creek, is now completed and a trial run yesterday proved most satisfactory. The dredge will commence full operations next Monday, working two shifts daily. GOLD AND BASE METALS Sir Colin Fraser, chairman of the Australian Mines and Metals Association, said at the annual meeting in Melbourne recently that the volume of production of non-ferrous base metal mines showed little change in 1937 from that of the preceding year, but its estimated value was about £4,000.000 greater than that of 1936. The combined value of the gold and base metals produced in Australia for the year was nearly £28,000,000. Sir Colin said that the dividends paid by the metalliferous mining industry in 1937 were £4,706.362 (Aust, currency). The industry found employment for 17,000 and a further 3000 were employed in the allied smelting and refining industries. Any appreciable fall in the gold price would have a disastrous effect on the Australian industry. A reversion to 85/- per fine ounce would wipe out 90 per cent of the industry. There need be no fear of an over supply of gold, though admittedly serious problems may arise from the maldistribution of supplies.
