ILLICIT TRADING

GROCERS WANT PROTECTION By Telegraph-Press Association WELLINGTON, March 8. In the grocery trade dispute before the Conciliation Commissioner the assessors for the employers were emphatic that until employers could get adequate protection from illicit trading they could not concede anything in the way of a reduction in working hours. Mr H. Wardell said it would be futile to close on Saturdays until legislation was passed making all shops close. Mr B. Sutherland said that whenever a holiday was held business was never made up. People either went without or bought groceries from the shop that illicitly sold goods. If they closed on Saturdays they would merely be handing over another half day’s illicit trading to a business round the corner.

The matter was held over for further discussion.
