WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

WOODBURY Mrs A. J. Kennedy presided over a smaller attendance than usual at the monthly meeting of the Woodbury Women’s Institute. Three new members, Mrs A. Rae, Mrs Morgan and Miss Eaton, were elected, and the resignation of Miss E. Fifleld was accepted with regret. Correspondence was received in regard to the visit of Miss Courtney, peace ambassador, to Timaru in March and it was intimated that it was hoped to be able to have her to speak in Geraldine on March 24. A beautiful piece of point lace work, brought back by Miss Davies from the Woodbury link at Home, was much admired and it was agreed to have it framed. Mrs Williams spoke of the history of Woodbury that was being compiled by members and it was decided to have a competition for the best design for its cover. A much appreciated talk and demonstration was given by Mrs A. Kelman and her daughter on the preserving of fruit and vegetables and jam-making. They answered many questions and gave recipes for chutneys, jams, etc.

All the competitions were judged by Mrs and Miss Kelman and Mrs Wylie and the following were awarded prizes: Large flowers: Mrs Williams 1, Mrs Bennett 2, Miss Webb 3. Smaller flowers: Mrs Bennett 1, Mrs McLeod ?, Mrs Armstrong 3. Slice of Christmas cake: Mrs M. Wooding 1, Mrs Chisnail 2, Miss M. A. Webb 3. Sausage rolls: Mrs M. Woodin'"; 1. Miss Webb 2. Mrs D. Rae 3. The following hostesses supplied afternoon tea: Mesdamcs Sharpe, McIntosh. Rae and the Misses Williams, Webb and Undrill. SHERWOOD DOWNS On Thursday the meeting of the Sherwood Downs Women’s Institute was held at the residence of Mrs C. Ross. Mrs Reid welcomed members and visitors from Fairlie. Letters from several members of the Kettering link, were read by Mrs Reid and were very much enjoyed. Mrs Arthur Bray offered to answer them. Arrangements are well in hand for the annual dance to be held early in April. A demonstration of honey extraction was given by Mr L. Ross, the various processes being closely watched by all present. Mr Ross was thanked for his very interesting demonstration. When afternoon tea had been served Miss Anne Scott asked Miss Mollie Reid, whose marriage is to take place shortly, to accept a small gift from Institute members. Miss Reid has been accompanist and a valued member of the Institute for some time. She was also give?! a posy bowl of flowers by Miss Edith Cuthbertson. When thanking Miss Scott and members for th- 5 gifts and good wishes, Miss Reid stated her intention of remaining a member of the Institute.

A splendid talk on the culture of gladioli was given by the Rev. J. S. Strang of Fairlie. He explained very fully the correct methods of preparing and growing these flowers, and afterwards answered many questions. Mrs Anniss thanked Mr Strang for his greatly appreciated talk. Nominations for the new committee were then received and members were reminded to place suggestions for next year’s programme in the suggestion box. There was a good response to the sale of vegetables and 6d mystery parcels, proceeds of which are to be sent to the North Island Maori Institutes. The competitions resulted as follows: Slice of Christmas cake: Mrs S. P. Bray 1, Mrs Ross 2, Mrs Ibbetson 3. Bloom: Mrs Ross 1, Mrs Moorhead 2, Mrs Ibbetson 3. Collection of vegetables: Mrs Mackenzie and Mrs M. B. T id (equal) 1, Miss Laird 2. The hostesses were: Mrs Gray, Mrs Ibbetson and Miss Laird. Mrs Reid thanked Mrs Ross for generosity in once again lending her home for the meeting. SEADOWN At the February meeting of the Seadown Women’s Institute, Mrs J. McCully presided. A motion of sympathy was passed ‘o Mrs W. Smith who had suffered a bereavement. After a long discussion it was decided to hold the sixth birthday party in the school grounds on March 5. Mrs J. Pemberton offered to make the birthday cake and Miss D. Brosnahan promised to ice it. Two invitations are to be sent to each of the neighbouring Institutes. The junior members undertook to arrange the programme for the afternoon.

A very interesting and instructive demonstration of pottery was given by Mrs Brewer, many useful and ornamental articles being on view. A vote of thanks was passed to the demonstrator by Mrs S. Cargo. Afternoon tea was dispensed by Mesdames S. Cargo and W. Cain, after which Mrs McCully called on Miss Betty Brosnahan to accept a beautiful bouquet with the best wishes of the Institute and Gardening Circle. Miss Brosnahan who is shortly to be married and who is leaving the district, suitably responded. All nominations for the new committee are to be handed to the secretary before the next meeting. McCully 1.

TE NGAWAI There was a good attendance at the February meeting of the Te Ngawai Women’s Institute. One new member, Mrs Barr, was welcomed. Mrs Taylor and Miss Cooling were chosen as delegates to attend the conference to be held at Geraldine during April. It was decided that Miss Cooling should buy the material for the banner, and that the younger members of the Institute should work it. Mrs Howes gave an interesting talk on a motor tour round the West Coast. Miss P. Howes gave a demonstration of framing pictures, using passe-partout. Mrs Hamber was thanked for making covers for the organ and piano. The designs for the banner were

judged by Mrs West and the winners were Miss D. Cooling 1, Miss Z. Elliott 2. The month’s competitions, judged by Mrs Barr and Mrs Cox, resulted as follows: —Seed Cake: Miss Z.
