CONTROL OF TRAFFIC IN TIMARU
To the Editor ol “ The Timaru Herald
Sii’—lt was very gratifying to me, as it must have been to hundreds of fellow citizens and visitors, to notice the every capable handling of motor and other traffic in Stafford Street by the four inspectors during the holiday season just passed. I desire to give praise to those responsible for the appointment of the two extra inspectors to help control the traffic during the busy holiday period, for their foresight has been fully appreciated. I would suggest to the powers that be that the two temporary inspectors’ positions be made permanent, for with the ever increasing traffic in this important and progressive town, almost a city, we can well do with four, if not even five or six inspectors to help see that the motor regulations are carried out, and to instruct motorists and others who are not as up to date with the regulations as they should be. Of course the matter of expenses will crop up with the appointment of additional inspectors, and too often money is given too great a value, but with life and limb at stake I think most people would waive the money issue. Traffic should be watched from say 6 a.m. to midnight, and with only two inspectors that of course cannot be done. Timaru is swarming with cars, motorcycles and cycles, t£e Hon. <R. Semple is doing all he can to make the roads safer for motorists and others, and if we can do a little more in that direction, we are on the right track. One never knows when one may be involved in an accident through the fault of the “other fellow,” and with inspectors likely to be about at any place, more care will be taken by most people than otherwise.—l am, etc., LIVE AND LET LIVE. Timaru, January 10.
