WORLD TRADE
DR. VAN ZEELAND’S PLANNING United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received January 11, 1.40 a.m.) LONDON, January 10. “The Times” points out, that as the result of C.-ect consultations Dr Van Zeeland will be able to present an agreed report, not an arbitrator’s award. The paper emphaises the impossibility of completely separating economic and political questions, and recalls that the present trade barriers are the legacy of the 1931 depression. Emergency self-protective measures and currency regulations tend, in the long run, to divide the world into two economic camps and might be useful if interdependence were once again emphasised, can best be done through the bank for International Settlements, playing a more active part in the management of the exchange equalisation funds. Some of Dr Van Zeeland’s conclusions will have to be discussed at an economic conference, for which there will be the most careful preparation. The task will be reached by diplomatic conversations.
