Scenes of religious fervour marked the homecoming of Cardinal Hinsley, the first Englishman to bring the Red Hat to Westminster Cathedral since Cardinal Bourne did so in 1911. Cardinal Hinsley at Folkestone Quay, passed through the ranks of the guard of honour composed of Catholic Societies, kneeling to receive his blessing. The new Cardinal was met at Victoria station by the Duke of Norfolk and Catholic Members of the House of Commons. Welcoming cheers from the crowded platform were taken up in the streets, where 10,000 had assembled. Cardinal Hinsley was motored to the Cathedral escorted by police, Boy Scouts and Irish pipers. The tumultuous cheers of his co-religionists drowned the Cathedral's bells. As Cardinal Hinsley ascended the Cathedral steps flowers were strewn on his path. Then, wearing the scarlet robes, he moved in procession to the High Altar under a canopy, preceded by the Cardinal's Hat, borne on a cushion. He addressed a huge congregation by means of a microphone, after which the “Te Deum” was sung. Cardinal Hinsley was greeted with a similar ovation while motoring to the Archbishop”s house where thousands had gathered. Still wearing his robes Cardinal Hinsley appeared on the balcony and repeated the Apostolic Blessing.
