MYSTERY SOS
SEARCHING IN VESTIG AT IO N ORDERED United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, January 8. The origin of the SOS signal received in Sydney on Friday afternoon remains a mystery. Cam and Sons, the owners oi the Himatangi, issued a statement that they could only regard the message as a malicious hoax, intended to reflect adversely on the seaworthiness of the Himatangi. A number of ships at sea raced tc the vicinity of the Himatangi, expecting to find the vessel in distress. The Deputy-Director of Navigation said he viewed the matter seriously and the incident would be the subject of a full inquiry. Wireless technician! would be called upon in a determiner attempt to track the source of the spurious call. A mystery SOS message, purporting to come from the coastal vesse Himatangi, was received at Sydney or Friday, resulting in several vessels, including the destroyer Vendetta, preparing to go to her assistance. Latei it was discovered that the Himatang arrived safely at Sydney the same night. Her captain disclaimed al knowledge of the SOS.
