According to casualties reported by the newspapers from December 24 to January 4, inclusive, road and drowning accidents in New Zealand during the Christmas and New Year holidays brought death to 21 persons and injuries to at least 58. This was a heavier toll than during the corresponding period a year ago, when 11 deaths were reported and 59 persons were injured. Most Ox the casualties occurred on the roads—ls out of the recent 21 deaths and seven of the 11 deaths in the holiday period 12 months ago resulted from accidents to motor cars or motor cycles. Official analysis will, no doubt, show what effect, if any, the road safety campaign has had on the incidence of holiday accidents. It has to be remembered, too, that during the recent holiday period there, were many more cars on the road than during the corresponding period a year ago. Drowning accidents increased in the holiday period just past, six lives being lost. In the holidays a year ago four lives were lost by drowning.
