WORLD FAIR

BRITISH PARTICIPATION IN UNITED STATES Uuitea Press Association —Bv Electric Telegraph - Copyright (Received January 9, 7.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 8. Mr Dow has signed a contract for Australia and Mr Collins for New Zealand, and the two Dominion flags were hoisted indicating their participation in the World Fair. Mr Beale, who conjointly signed for the United Kingdom and certain Crown Colonies was also present at the raising of the Union Jack. All three expressed great satisfaction at the settlement of a difficult point. The United States Government has offered free to each participating nation 10.000 feet of covered space on the ground level, but the authorities were embarrassed when more nations accepted the offer than was expected. An attempt was made to change the understanding by reducing the space. Mr Dow declined to accept the change until he received an assurance in writing that the same would be applied to all nations. The compromise further included the provision that the three above named British group would receive 40.000 feet, of which 25.000 feet would be on the gound level. It is not yet decided what participation Australia will make in the 100.000 feet of uncovered space Britain is taking and for which payment will be made. South Africa has not yet indicated her action regarding the Fail - . Canada will have her own pavilion.
