LAMB IN DEMAND EFFECT OF LOWER VALUES Market prices for new season’s New Zealand lamb are easier on heavier arrivals. More interest is being taken at the lower prices. The mutton market is very firm owing to the shortage of spot stocks. The frozen beef market is steady and unchanged. New Zealand porker pigs are firmer with good consumption, but New Zealand baconer pigs are nominal. The tendency of the market is to be easier.

The weekly quotations are based on actual transactions of wholesale quantities of the descriptions of meat mentioned and are for representative parcels of the goods offering during the week, being for business done on the basis of delivered to Smithfield market and/or ex London stores CORNSACKS AND WOOLPACKS The present state of the Iridian jute industry is interesting and indications are for lower prices of cornsacks and woolpacks. For the last year or so attempts have been made to regulate the output of the mills by reducing the number of the looms and by apportioning a percentage for each mill. The move appeared to be meeting with success until, according to a report, the agreement was being broken by some operators. The result was fierce competition. Some new mills of small capacity, but effective units in the trade, started. Many of the older mills have replaced their slow working machines with the modern quick operating type and are thus able to increase supplies. A late report from Calcutta states that the opinion is firmly held in many quarters there that the future will see the supply in excess of the demand which would eventually force prices down.
