WORK FOR THE WEEK

ELOWER GARDEN Keep down weeds by continuous hoeing on all possible occasions and keep a sharp lookout for insect pests which soon make their presence known during warm weather. Spray with nicotine when necessary. The long straggling shoots of violets and pansies should be removed to induce the plants to flower in the autumn. A topdressing of light rich soil will induce fresh growth. When large enough these young shoots may be removed as cuttings and after rooting should be placed in a warm place where they should flower throughout the winter. Most garden hedges have now made the greater part of their season’s growth and trimming may be completed before the growth becomes too hard. This may be done at any time during the summer and autumn provided plenty of time is allowed the subsequent growth to become sufficiently ripened to withstand the winter. VEGETABLE GARDEN Any vacant plots which are not likely to be used for some time should be raked over and sown with oats, mustard, lupins or some other crop for green manure. This is the best method of adding humus to the soil and should be practised whenever possible. inter crops such as celery, leeks, cabbages and so on should be put out during favourable weather. Similar crops, i.e. brocolli, cabbage, curly kale, and so on may be sown in situ to prevent any check by transplanting during dry weather. Thin as desired when large enough. Young shoots on apple and pear trees should be cut to half their length to check the flow of sap. Where mildew is present the prunings should be burned and the trees sprayed with lime sulphur at the rate of one ounce to three gallons of water.
