BURGLARS’ PARTY
CIGARS AND LIQUOR Sy Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, January 6 One of the most audacious crimes committed in Auckland for some time took place at the week-end when thieves apparently settled down to a night of revelry in the kitchen after ransacking the residence*of Mr W. J. Grevatt, of 11 Vermont Street, Ponsonby. Every drawer in the house was pulled open and the contents strewn on the floors, the door-handle of a small safe blown off with gelignite, a writing cabinet forced open, and the clothes pulled off all the beds in an evident endeavour to find keys.
The pantry was then raided, several tins of pork and beans, asparagus, and spaghetti being opener and the contents consumed, the refreshments cabinet cleared of its contents, and a quantity of cigars smoked. The police found used dishes which indicated that the crime was the work of two men, fifteen cigar ends were strewn over the floor, and a number of empty bottles were lying on the table. The burglary was discovered by Mr M. Bowles, who lives next door, but later investigations showed that the thieves entered the house by forcing the window in the pantry. The police were immediately notified and investigations were carried out by the detective branch. Mr Grevatt is at present away on a holiday tour.
