POLITICAL PLOTS IN RUSSIA
SOVIET LEADERS IN PERIL 4: INTENSIFIED PURGE CERTAIN United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received January 6, 8.30 p.m.) LONDON, January 6. Tire Riga correspondent of “The Dally Mail” says: A large number of arrests followed the discovery of new conspiracies against the lives of M. Stalin and M. Yezhov. A number of higher officers of the Moscow garrison are accused of planning to shoot M. Stalin during the approaching festivities celebrating the anniversary of the organisation of the Red Army. Others are charged with planning to assassinate M. Yezhov during his tour of inspection of garrisons in the Moscow province. According to a Moscow report the second group is considered the more dangerous since it has obtained a large supply of cartridges and hand grenades from the local arsenal for use in a mutiny against M. Yezhov’s O.G.P.U. troops. The new plots have resulted in the appointment of M. Yezhov as Commissar-General entitling him to wear a Marshal’s star.
