TEMUKA

WHITE BUTTERFLY MENACE SEEN ON WHEAT CROPS The possibility of the white butterfly attacking wheat crops was a suggestion made yesterday by a Winchester farmer, who reported having seen swarms of the pest rising and settling on crops of the cereal in his dictrict this season. The most outstanding example he quoted was that of a comparatively small paddock close to the township, where myriads of butterflies were yesterday hovering continuously over the crop, while a field of swedes nearby appeared to be attracting only a few. A superficial examination of wheat plants did not disclose any immediate damage.

DOMAIN ADMIRED MOTOR CAMPERS' VIEWS One of the most valuable guides to the requirements of visitors to the motor camp, as improvements have been possible, has been the visitors’ book, which has often contained practical suggestions that have in the past been used by the Progress League. This year, in spite of the increased number of campers, the book contains fewer entries than is usually the case. Most of the remarks accompanying entries contain praise of the manner in which the camp has been equipped. Many express admiration of the Domain as a whole and practically all the notes record appreciation of the caretaker's helpfulness. Typical of those in praise of the place is the following: “An excellent camping ground for the size of the town, and one which will Increase in popularity each year. Domain Board should keep up with times as now doing. Most obliging caretaker.” Another statement reads: “Temuka can congratulate itself on the beautiful ground which is situated at the side of the gardens. There is every convenience for campers and we have enjoyed ourselves very much.” There is only one suggestion for the improvement of the ground—the provision of drainage for the sloping eastern portion—but that does not mean that the grounds were generally considered perfect. Other suggestions, not recorded in the visitors’ book, have been for a light at the entrance to the ground and for more tables for the use of visitors.

The extensiveness and beauty of the surroundings, the wealth of trees and the memorials, especially that recording the names of the district’s pioneers, are subjects that have provoked favourable comment this year.

GENERAL NEWS So exceptional has been the growth of the lawns in the Domain, due to

the rains and warm weather, that the curator (Mr G. Fletcher) and his assistants have spent practically all their time since the holidays in mowing. Before Christmas the grass was burned brown with the continued dry weather, and mowing was a comparatively small work. The Domain Board's art union in support of the recent queen carnival was drawn yesterday in the presence of the police and members of the committee. Miss Mary Thornley, of Ormsby Street, was the winner. “LOVE IN A BUNGALOW’ As pleasant as a spring breeze; as gay and sparkling as rare champagne. That describes Universal’s delightful comedy drama, “Love in a Bungalow,” which screens at the Elite Theatre this evening, with Nan Grey and Kent Taylor in the leading roles. It is topflight entertainment for the whole family. You’ll smile, you’ll chuckle, you’ll laugh, you’ll roar—you’ll like every minute of it “Love In a Bungalow” tells the romantic story of a beautiful hostess in a model house who comes to work one morning to find a handsome young stranger taking his ease in the master’s bedroom. Miss Grey and Taylor are at their very best in this mirthful film, and are strongly supported by a cast of comedy favourites which includes Richard Carle, Margaret McWade, Hobart Cavanaugh. Jack Smart, Minerva Urecal and Louise Beavers. The picture is outstanding, too, for the beauty and novelty of its backgrounds. Universal’s ace director, John Harkrider, built a complete model home- the kind you will want to live in. The picture is swiftly paced, and every scene packs a laugh. “Love In a Bungalow” is truly “must see” entertainment.
