WELLINGTON ARTIST
SUCCESS IN LONDON LONDON, December 18. A Wellington artist who has established a name for himself in London is Mr F. H. Coventry. His latest work to receive recognition is his design for the cover and frontispiece of “England and the Maori Wars,” by Dr. A. J. Harrop. The design shows natives performing a haka, and portrays a symbolic interpretation of the early relationships of the Maoris and pakehas. Masks of a Maori head and an English soldier’s face and helmet have been included, together with the rose and silver fem.
The original design is shortly to be placed on view in one of the windows of New Zealand House.
Mr Coventry has also had accepted by the Society of Graphic Art two sketches for its present exhibition at the Royal Institute Gallery, Piccadilly. One is a study of an Australian paper bark tree. The other is a view of the Egyptian desert in which a column of troops is on the march. Mr Coventry has employed a pencil and fine pen most effectively. Earlier in the year Mr Coventry was responsible for a fine design in glass, which was used as a decoration on the P. and O. liner Orcades.
