POST OFFICE BUSINESS
INCREASE IN TELEGRAMS Telegraphic business at the Fairlie Post Office over the holidays showed an increase on last year. An interesting point was the quantity of work transmitted through the office to and from outlying offices such as the Hermitage, Pukaki and Tekapo. Transmitted telegrams exceeded those forwarded or received in Fairlie, the comparative figures, with those for last year in parentheses, being: Received in Fairlie 574 (481), forwarded 581 (522), transmitted 708 (734). The business to and from Fairlie showed n substantial increase. The number of outward toll calls put through on December 24 was 107, which was lower than the record number. 146. handled last year. Over the holidays, outward toll calls totalled 913 and inward and through calls are estimated at 1000 and 650 respectively. The total calls were considerably higher than those in 1936, which were regarded as a record. Mails despatched and received also exceeded the quantity in 1936, and the staff had to work long hours to cope with the increase.
