PROBATION GRANTED

BAG-SNATCHER BEFORE COURT By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON. January 5. Ward Poynder Curtis (26), motor driver, was admitted to probation for two years by Mr J. H. Luxford, S.M., on a charge of bag-snatching to which he pleaded guilty. Joyce Harper, in evidence said that while waiting for a man in Grey Street, and just as she saw him coming on the other side, two men came suddenly from behind her. and snatched her bag. She ran after them up Featherston Street to Lambton Quay and then went back. She and Lister went along, and saw the two men in Brandon Street. Lister gave chase, and she followed the three men. The men ran on to the wharf, and she afterwards saw Curtis walk off and hand her bag to a constable. Lister’s evidence was that the two men separated on the wharf. Constable McEachern, who was on the wharf, said he saw the three men run on. He noticed Curtis had a handbag, and followed and caught him just as he was about to try to throw it away. Curtis said he had had a few drinks. It was an impulsive act. He had never been in trouble before. He gave the Magistrate the name of the man with him. The value of the bag was set down at £1 5s and it contained £1 14s 6d in money.
