IMPROVED SOCIAL SERVICES
SCOPE OF NATIONAL INSURANCE IMPROVED PENSIONS PROVISIONS British Official Wireless (Received January 5, 6.30 p.m.) RUGBY, January 4. The Minister of Health (Sir Kingsley Wood), in a presidential address at the Educational Association in London, said an important gap would be filled in 1938, in the national Insurance in the provision for further medical care for working boys and girls. Beginning on April 4, upwards of one million boys and girls who were not previously under the scheme, would become eligible for medical benefit. The Minister added that the year would also see a new midwifery service. Any mother, whatever her circumstances, would be able to receive the expert assistance oi a midwife, and if c private doctor were engat’.c, of a maternity nurse.
The Minister said it was hoped to pass the Blind Persons Bill soon after Parliament reassembled. The Bill would reduce the age at which pensions were payable to blind persons, from 50 to 40 years. The Minister said that 1938 likewise would be an important one for people of limited means who had qualified to benefit under the new blackcoated workers pension scheme.
