GRAIN SHIPS’ RACE | TWO COMPETITORS MAY CALL AT NEW ZEALAND Thirteen big sailing vessels—nearly all the square-rigged ships in the world still in commission—have set out from European ports for the wheat loading centres of South Australia, according to advice received in Sydney. Most of them will compete in the grain race to Falmouth or Queenstown, an annual event which is carrying on the traditions of the famous tea and wool | races.

J Two of the competitors will be Cap- | tain Erikson's pair, Passat and Pom- ; mern, which dead-heated in last year’s race with passages of 94 days, PomI mern eventually claimed the victory by I a few hours. Of the 13 ships now on their way out, 11 belong to Captain Erikson, of Mariehamn, in the Aland | Islands, and fly the flag of Finland. I They are the four-masters Passat, I Pommern, Olivebank, Lawhill, Viking, Moshulu, Pamir and Archibald Russell, and the three-masters Killoran, Penang and Winterhude. The others are the Swedish training ship Abraham, Rydberg and the German vessel Admiral Karpfanger, which took part in last year’s race as L’Avenir but which has since been sold by Captain Erikson to the Hamburg-Amerika Line and refitted as a training ship. The notable absence is the C. B. Pedersen. a veteran of many grain races, which was sunk in a collision off the Azores on her homeward voyage last year. For the first time for many years most of the windjammers have been able to secure outward cargoes, thereby greatly enhancing the value of the round voyage. The Pamir and Penang have secured charters to load guano in the Seychelles Islands for New Zealand on the outward voyage.
