HEAVY DAMAGE
FIRE AT RONGOTEA By Telegraph—Press Association PALMERSTON N., January 5. A fire at Rongotea, 15 miles from Palmerston North last night, completely destroyed Mr James Aird’s drapery establishment and dwelling, and Mr I. C. Eades’s billiard saloon and hairdresser’s shop. When first noticed at 11 o’clock the fire had a strong hold, and in the absence of fire-fighting facilities, efforts were directed to s?ve the adjoining premises by bucket brigade. Other shops were endangered, but the absence of wind assisted to control the flames. The outbreak, the origin of which is unknown, completely destroyed the buildings, which were part of the original shopping area, and the anticipated losses will be heavy.
