LIVE STOCK EMBARGO
MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE AGAINST LIFTING IT
The Hon. W. Lee Martin, Minister of Agriculture, in the course of opening a new dairy factory for the GreytownWairarapa Co-op. Dairy Co., Ltd., touched on the embargo on stock from the Old Country. He referred to the reports of foot-and-mouth disease in England where fifteen counties were isolated, and it was costing the country millions each year in an attempt to stamp out the disease. He could not recommend Cabinet to lift the embargo, much as he would like to see the importation of fresh blood to New Zealand. As far as the dairy industry was concerned, there was no need of importations, as the stock was as good as any elsewhere. With the enormous number of cattle in New Zealand, and the small number of veterinarians, it could be seen how hopeless it would be to stamp out the disease if it were introduced.
