A division was obviated in the New Year Handicap at Invercargill by the reduction of the field to sixteen. Sparkle and Valmarch were the only ones with winning form and they dominated the betting. Triple Cone was left at the post and Signoaina began very badly. Valmarch, Sparkle and Grey Seal led along the back, and it the top the order was Valmarch. Sparkle, Waitoru and Half and Half. Valmarch shook off Sparkle after reaching the straight, but was challenged by Half and Half who appeared to have him beaten when his rider eased and enab'-'I Valmarch to win by a long neck. Ardmayle was finishing fast a length away, just ahead of Fleet Street. It seemed that Half and Half should have won.
