“The Daily Herald’’ says: The Minister of War, Mr L. Hore Belisha, will shortly announce the most drastic reconstruction of the British Army that has ever occurred in peace or war. It will aim at a force which, although small, shall be most intensively mechanised, groups of half a dozen men possessing the striking force of a former battalion. The military Budget for 1938 will exceed £100,000,000, enabling the complete equipping of half the infantry with machine guns, instead of rifles; the delivery of hundreds of the new type of high-speed tanks; the complete mechanisation of the artillery and the re-equipment of the Territorial antiaircraft defence with guns, searchlights and sound locators.
